Delegates are Diamonds: Learning from Union Delegates’ Experiences in Australia

Resource Library

Many Australian unions are addressing the challenge of declining union membership by shifting their priority from servicing members, to organising workplaces (ACTU 1999, 2003). In this approach, identifying and developing delegates and activists is critical to establishing union strength in workplaces and building up membership and activism, and the approach encourages a shift in union action from the union office, to the workplace.

This report is published with the intent of helping union delegates, activists, leaders and members to build better unions to more effectively represent working people.

The report provides an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of delegates in workplaces: the difficulties they have experienced, and what they find rewarding and challenging. It also provides unions with an opportunity to review the role of the delegate and improve support provided for delegates within unions.
