Summary
Video highlights how superannuation was established by the maritime union in 1967, for all staff who could afford it. It secured some dignity for their retirement. Some workers worked much longer than they should have, finishing off, they had nothing to retire on. Shipping was always a big industry and it developed in Australia much more than rail or road ever did. But it was a harsh industry. There was only a pension to live on at retirement. Stevedore seafarers established the first trusts in the country. Safe income put in the super every month. Retirement funds also offered value for money. With the merger of the two, SERF and SRF the funds increases its volume and are able to reduce fees, now only paid once and not twice.
