Organiser Pathway

Developing the capacities of union organisers is essential in supporting workers to build power in their workplaces.  The ATUI Pathways program is a world-leading program organised to deliver the latest skills, techniques and thinking over a sustained period of time. 

 The ATUI Pathways program consists of 4 levels. Each level has been designed to enhance and lift the skills and knowledge of a modern organiser.  

Organiser Pathway Level 1: Organising Foundations

Organising Foundations, delivered through two blocks of face-to-face educational sessions with ongoing support through short online reflective sessions.   

Key outcomes for this course include: 

  • Undertake the steps needed to organise a workplace
  • Take part in conversations about power at the industry, national and international levels
  • Plan and develop member leadership and organisation.

Online options are also available. The ATUI recommends newer organisers attend this course early in their organising journey.

Organiser Pathway Level 2: Building Union

Building Union is the second level of the ATUI’s Organiser Pathway – a pathway designed to equip organisers with the practical skills they need to excel in the vital role they play within the movement. Delivered through two blocks of face-to-face educational sessions with ongoing support delivered through short online reflective sessions.   

Key outcomes from this course include: 

  • Skills to prepare for and conduct effective negotiations to resolve disputes and in the context of multiple demands in bargaining
  • Demonstrate recruiting linked to issues, values and hope and in different contexts
  • Explore importance of collective action in teaching union and plan for mobilisation, escalation and inoculation.  

To support learning and development, the ATUI recommends a 6-month gap between level 1 and level 2.

Organiser Pathway Level 3: Organising for Change

Organising for Change is the third level of the ATUI’s Organiser Pathway – a pathway designed to equip organisers with the practical skills they need to excel in the vital role they play within the movement. Delivered through two blocks of face-to-face educational sessions with ongoing support delivered through a short online reflective sessions. 

Key outcomes from this course include: 

  • Empowering workplace activists in the development and implementation of organising plans
  • Critically assess the framing and reframing of the economy and unions
  • Critically analyse inequity in terms of behaviour, systems and underpinning assumptions  and ideas.  

To support learning and development, the ATUI recommends a 6-month gap between level 2 and level 3.

Organiser Pathway Level 4

Craft of Organising is the final tier in the Institute’s Organiser Pathway, catering to proficient and experienced organisers. The course develops participants’ capacity to take responsibility for planning and executing campaigns, extends conversation and messaging skills,  develops strategies around long-term leadership and organisational structures in the workplace.

Participants will also gain an understanding of how unions can act strategically at an industry level, as well as how to make use of effective communication techniques when planning and facilitating campaigns.

This course is delivered over two workshops (4 days each) which take place approximately one month apart.
